Integration with the Curriculum

Conservation education needs to teach the young learner how to observe and love what is around him in the environment. This project shifts the erstwhile focus from from a narrow and limited approach to a multi-disciplinary approach. So a teacher of any grade and discipline can integrate this project with her teaching.

Integration with the Curriculum

One of the two components that every school that has registered with this initiative needs to fulfill is Integration with the Curriculum. At the very outset, we would like to reassure teachers that this does not entail introducing a new subject in your curriculum.

Multi-disciplinary approach

Conservation education has so far been dealt with only by the biology or geography teacher and has generally been limited to mere statistical information regarding plant and animal species. It has also been a pedantic approach. We provide you with resources to revise this approach and make conservation education cross-disciplinary, interesting and interactive.

Conservation education is much broader and larger than information about the status of a species. It must enlighten the learner about a species and the web of life that it is a part of, the habitat it lives in and the threats that it faces in the changing world. We also need to orient our young learners with the latest developments and successes towards conservation efforts, which are collaborative and involve professionals from all spheres. We need to acquaint our young learners with the range of professionals working towards conservation. The range extends from biologists, botanists, mathematicians, engineers, veterinarians, physicists, geographers, estate managers, oceonographers, surveyors, planners and ecologists to communicators and media professionals. With wildlife and habitats under serious threat, we urgently need more professionals working in the field of conservation. This programme might help inspire more students to take up careers in this field.

Conservation education shifts the focus from a narrow and limited approach to a multi-disciplinary approach. A teacher of any grade and discipline can integrate conservation education with her teaching.


We need not look too far to make conservation education a truly enlightening and interesting experience. The phenomenal success of houbara conservation in the UAE is an ideal vehicle for conservation education. Resources to convey the positive aspects of conservation are available at hand. A manual on conservation education with special focus on the Houbara will be provided. Teachers of all disciplines and age levels will be able to integrate conservation education with the curriculum.

Training of Teachers

Training sessions will be conducted by the IFHC to orient teachers with methodology to integrate conservation education with their curricula.

Teachers can also use this platform to share their unique experiences and teaching techniques besides those provided by the programme.


At the end of the year, each school will submit its report with evidence, showing how it has integrated conservation education using the story of houbara conservation. Evaluation of these reports will be done by an expert panel and schools will be awarded due recognition for their efforts.
